The handling of Carbon Black
Carbon Black is available in powder and bead form. Handling systems vary considerably depending on the form of the carbon black.
Carbon Black is mainly supplied in bags, big bags and silos.
Powder carbon black has a low bulk density, resulting in higher transport costs, and is usually bagged due to its relatively poor flow characteristics. Silos, economy, freight, cleanliness or specific requirements, may necessitate the use of a beaded carbon black. Beaded carbon black is much easier to handle due to its much better flow and conveying properties.
When using beaded carbon black, the wetting/pre-mixing times should be extended as much as possible so that bead dissolution is assured. A compounder can expect that dispersion will require more work when using beaded carbon black. This extra work, could be avoided by filling the beads faster into the mixing unit.
Storage
Carbon Black should be stored in a clean and dry place where it is not exposed to high temperatures, open flames and strong aromatic chemicals.
Transport
Carbon Black is not an ADR, either a flammable solid or a self-heating substance under the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods and the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code.
Carbon Black is not classified as a dangerous good by the following agencies:
– Brazilian Ministry of Transport – GEIPOT
– Canadian Dangerous Goods Regulations (TDG)
– European Dangerous Goods Regulations with the RAIL – RID, on the road – ADR or on the Rhine – ADNR
– International Air Transport Association (IATA) United Nations (no UN number)
– US Department of Transportation of Hazardous Materials regulations (DOT, GGVS and GGVE)
